The Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) of the U.K. and the European Outdoor Group have commentated positively about a campaign being launched by GP Batteries, a British producer of rechargeable batteries. Its “Recharge the Outdoors” campaign encourages consumers to recycle single-use disposable batteries and switch to eco-friendly rechargeable batteries. According to the company, 600 million batteries are thrown away in the U.K. each year. If they end up in landfills, their heavy metals can produce toxic substances that will seep through into the environment. Noting that one of its own batteries can be recharged 1,500 times, GP Batteries is challenging outdoor retailers to sell own rechargeable batteries. We would like to add that they could be recharged with solar power banks like those of WakaWaka (there is an article on this firm in this issue).
