An emblematic personality in the Swedish outdoor industry, Åke Nordin, has passed away at the age of 77. He was the hard-headed Swedish entrepreneur who built his own backpack at 14 and founded Fjällräven in Örnsköldsvik in 1960. The company subsequently diversified its range and bought other outdor companies to become the Fenix Outdoor Group. It already transpired in July that Nordin was severely ill. His son Martin, who became the chief executive of Fenix Outdoor in 2007, told Swedish newspapers that his father had lost some of his zest for life three years earlier, when his wife passed away. Nordin was hailed as an inspiring business personality and a founding father of the Swedish outdoor industry.
