Origin Materials and Primaloft have announced a strategic alliance to develop carbon-negative insulating fibers. Primaloft has agreed to a capacity reservation agreement with Origin Materials to provide the textile industry with novel sustainable material solutions. The collaboration will focus on the development of fibers made from carbon-negative PET and next-gen polymers using Origin’s patented technology platform. The fibers are expected to have applications in a variety of end products, including insulating fibers for leading outdoor, fashion and lifestyle brands.
The collaboration is set to leverage the position of Latham, New York-based Primaloft Inc. as a specialty producer of insulating fibers and filaments with over 900 global brand partners, including brands like Patagonia, Salomon, Timberland, La Sportiva, Adidas and Nike.
Based in San Francisco, Origin Materials is pioneering a new approach to additive manufacturing of end-use parts. Origin One, the company’s production-ready 3D printer, uses programmable photopolymerization to control light, heat and force to produce parts with accuracy and consistency. The company works with a network of partners to develop a wide range of materials for commercial use. It was founded in 2015 and is led by alumni from Google and Apple. Investors include Floodgate, DCM, Mandra Capital, Haystack, TDK Ventures, Stanford University and Joe Montana.
