Patagonia is extending its Worn Wear recycling scheme to a number of stores following the success of a pilot launched in its Portland, Oregon store in October 2012. Worn Wear is part of the company's Common Threads Partnership with its customers to take mutual responsibility for the items it makes that people purchase. The Worn Wear program makes it possible to recycle, down-cycle or re-purpose all of Patagonia's products once consumers have finished with them, as the company accepts them back at selected stores. Items accepted for trade-in include Patagonia shells, fleece, down and synthetic insulation, as well as ski and alpine pants. Customers receive a trade-in credit valued at 50 percent of the price of the item, which will then be sold through the store's Common Threads Worn Wear section. Credit can be redeemed for purchases in store or online. The Worn Wear section is now open in four locations across the U.S. including Portland, Seattle, Palo Alto and Chicago (Lincoln Park). The Ventura, California-based outdoor company incorporates environmental responsibility into product development, and since 1996 has used only organically grown cotton in its clothing line. Its entire product line is recyclable through its Common Threads Partnership.
