Primaloft, the specialist in insulation material, has announced the introduction of P.U.R.E., a proprietary manufacturing technique that is said to reduce carbon emissions by as much as 48 percent. The acronym stands for “Produced Using Reduced Emissions.” Patagonia will be the first brand partner to incorporate Primaloft P.U.R.E. manufacturing technology in the autumn of 2020. The initial insulation product being produced with P.U.R.E. manufacturing technology uses 100 percent post-consumer recycled material while maintaining, according to Primaloft, all the insulating and performance benefits of the existing Primaloft Gold Insulation. The conversion of the yearly production of Primaloft Gold Insulation to P.U.R.E. manufacturing is said to result in: a 48 percent reduction of carbon dioxide emissions; 348,111lbs (157,900.5 kg) of carbon dioxide reduction; and 438,617 miles (705,886 km) of carbon dioxide savings. Traditional insulation manufacturing requires that fibers are thermally bonded by moving through a slow, high-heat oven. Primaloft explained that it completed a comprehensive environmental assessment of its manufacturing and determined that removing the need for thermal ovens – using air instead of heat – would drastically reduce carbon emissions.
