Safilo announced the release of the first sunglasses made for The Ocean Cleanup, a Dutch non-profit environmental organization that develops advanced technologies to extract plastic pollution from the oceans.

The Ocean Cleanup sunglasses are made of injected plastic deriving from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP). They are available in a limited edition, and each pair will carry a QR code providing background information about the product, the project and the specific place where the marine plastic pollution was collected.

The material used for each pair of sunglasses is estimated to represent 24 football fields worth of waste and the entire limited edition will contribute to absorbing the equivalent of about 500,000 football fields of refuse in the GPGP. The sunglasses will be available exclusively on The Ocean Cleanup website, and all the proceeds will be used to fund the organization’s mission, Safilo said.
