Klarna, the leading global payment provider and shopping service from Sweden, has teamed up with Backcountry.com, the largest online retailer of premium outdoor sports equipment and apparel in the U.S. and owner of German online outdoor retailer Bergfreunde.de, to offer customers flexible “buy now, pay later” solutions. Backcountry.com customers can now shop for outdoor sporting equipment and goods using Klarna’s four equal, interest-free payments.
Since the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak, both Klarna and Backcountry.com have seen an upward trend in consumers looking for outdoor activities and exercise options. Data from the Klarna app showed a demographic increase in spending in the sports and leisure category during the pandemic. In particular, Gen Z shoppers increased their spending in the leisure category by 28 percent per week during March-May compared to the period before the pandemic in January-February. There was also a 105 percent increase in running shoes purchases.
Backcountry.com is the newest member of Klarna’s growing merchant network, which currently includes Gymshark, Burton, Finish Line, Hurley among others.
