Johnson Outdoors' sales increased by 20 percent to $85.3 million for the three months up to Jan. 1, with a negative impact of 2 percentage points from exchange rate changes. The three months are the first quarter of Johnson Outdoors' fiscal year and a seasonally weak quarter. The company said its fishing, camping and water recreation divisions had strong momentum, while the diving business was still weighed down by market conditions. Jetboil's turnover advanced at a double-digit rate but that could not compensate for the decline in the group's tent sales. Johnson Outdoors reported an operating loss of $0.9 million for the quarter, but that was a strong improvement compared with a loss of $7.3 million for the same quarter the previous year, due to higher volumes and lower legal expenses. Johnson Outdoors ended the quarter with a net loss of $0.5 million, against a loss of $4.2 million.
