A new forecast from CIE (Cycling Industries Europe), CONEBI (Confederation of the European Bicycle Industry) and ECF (European Cyclists’ Federation), three industry groups based in Brussels, has predicted that Europeans will buy an extra 10 million bicycles per year by 2030. This would represent an increase of 47 percent as compared to the annual number in 2019. E-bikes are expected to drive growth, with a projected increase from 3.7 million bikes sold in 2019 to 17 million in 2030. The ten million milestone of e-bikes sold per year could be reached as soon as 2024, the trade organizations said. The forecast was obtained by combining the analysis of current trends with that of Covid-19 impacts and government announcements about future cycling investments. The bicycle market was boosted by the global Covid-19 pandemic, which led people to avoid public transport and modify their mobility habits. Furthermore, with the long-standing closure of fitness clubs in several countries, also prompted by the pandemic, more people headed outside for physical activities, including biking.
