Pete Gerber, founder of Gerber Legendary Blades, died at home on Sept. 29. He was 90. In 1939, three things happened: Gerber and his father sent a gift of handmade cutlery to the clients of their advertising firm; the cutlery was quickly picked up by the mail-order retailer Abercrombie & Fitch; and, as a result, Pete Gerber established Gerber Legendary Blades. The company now makes multi-tools, axes, handsaws, machetes, headlamps, flashlights, survival kits and digging implements as well as knives. It remains headquartered near Portland, Oregon, and is now owned by Fiskars, the Finnish brand of tools.
