Polartec has launched a new synthetic insulation technology that should enable the development of what the company has described as the “first-ever breathable ‘puffy' garments.” The new technology, unlike down and existing synthetic insulation batting, features a highly stable layer allowing for more open and breathable fabrics to be used on the outer and inner layers of “puffy-style” garments. Classic puffy garments require “down-proof” or high-density woven layers, which act as a vapor barrier. They work well in static conditions but moisture gets trapped inside the garment during even minimal activity. Polartec Alpha also offers fast dry times, is highly compressible, and provides inherent wind resistance and warmth without weight, the company says. The new technology has been developed to meet the performance requirements of the US Special Operations Forces (SOF), which are being supplied with Polartec Alpha jackets. Brands who have adopted the new insulation include The North Face, Eddie Bauer, Eider, Mammut, Marmot, and 66º North.
