Ternua is launching a new autumn/winter line of apparel, called Whales Spirit, whose items are made entirely of recycled materials. The target market is the so-called “Ternua tribe,” consisting of urbanites with environmentalist values. Whales Spirit amounts to a form of outdoor athleisure into which the Spanish-Basque outdoor brand has infused technical design for mountaineering. Past such items from the brand include the Terranova/SouthRiver and Craddle sustainable jackets, which won prizes at Ispo in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Whales Spirit will include sweatshirts, vests, jackets and coats, for both men and women, and combine the brand’s own Dryshell Prowool, Warmshell, Windshell, Shelltec or Microshell with textile products from third parties, such as Stormfleece Pro, Gore-Tex and EcoStorm. The filling will be Primaloft’s recycled post-consumer polyester, Primaloft’s Bio Gold insulation or Neokdun’s recycled down. The fiber will be Stretch 20D nylon (made from recycled post-industrial residues), 20D polyester (from Ternua’s own scrap weave) or polyester made with recycled bottles made of PET plastic. Finally, the water-repellency treatment used will be free of PFCs. The new line will be making its debut at Ispo Munich, coming up on Jan. 26-29.
