Woodland plans to open a chain of large-format stores to sell camping and trekking gear in India. The company will spend about Rs. 500 crore (€58.5m-$80.4m) in three years to open eight large-format stores across the country to sell rigs, ropes, poles, tents and sleeping bags, among other products. The shops will be designed by Huber, a German interiors company, in a way to provide customers with a feel of the wild. Five outlets measuring 10,000-15,000 square feet will be opened this year, with the first store in New Delhi. The company will later open stores in Mumbai and Bangalore. Production capacity is also being increased from four million pairs a year to six million pairs, to cater for the demand from retail expansion, with the construction of four new factories in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and increasing capacity at the company's plant near Chennai. Adventure gear will be retailed only through company-owned outlets, which Woodland indicated as the way forward, as opposed to franchising. The company currently runs 380 exclusive stores and has five franchises across India.
