Several American news outlets are reporting that Confluence Outdoor, the U.S. watersports equipment company, is preparing to shut down its Bomber Gear apparel brand and end distribution of its Wave Sport whitewater boats in North America. The move was reportedly outlined in a letter by Confluence's chief executive, Sue Rechner, to employees. It should enable the company to more strongly target the fast-growing SUP and kayak fishing markets, while maintaining its strong business in the recreation and touring business. Wave Sport's distribution is to focus on the European whitewater market. The acquisition of Boardworks Surf earlier this year fits with the same goals in Confluence's five-year expansion plan. As part of this drive, Confluence has recruited managers for production, purchasing and operations during the last year, while investing $1.5 million in manufacturing equipment to respond more rapidly to in-season demand.
