Sympatex has published a survey among 1,000 German consumers between 18 and 59 years on how they take care of their functional outerwear. 70 percent of the participants said that they had at least one piece of functional outerwear in their households. 40 percent of them admitted that they did not know how to wash and maintain those items properly. 35 percent said that they would not wash waterproof apparel on a regular basis because they were afraid of doing harm to the functionality of the gear. Sympatex suggests that there is quite a good opportunity for retailers to inform their consumers on how to wash and maintain outerwear in an appropriate way. The report also revealed that 16+ percent of the enquired consumers used their functional jackets for sportive exercising only. 23+ percent said that they would ask for tips on maintainance at the point of purchase when buying an item.
