The outdoor/fitness segment at Garmin had a big 32 percent increase in sales to $142.3 million in the second quarter ended June 26. All four categories within the unit (outdoor, golf, cycling and running) saw growth. The operating income of the segment rose by 24 percent to $62.8 million, but its gross margin slumped by 3.3 percentage points to 64.5 percent. The products singled out by the company as excellent performers were the Dakota series of handhelds, the Edge 500 and the Forerunner 110. Garmin as a whole had a 9 percent increase in revenues to $728.8 million in the quarter, but the company’s net income slipped by 17 percent to $134.8 million.
