The two general managers of Intersport Germany reported quite satisfying figures for Intersport Polska, the Polish unit of which the Germans are a 25 percent shareholder. Sales were up by 5-6 percent exceeding €70 million (including VAT). It is said that the commitment to the Polish market has been very good in terms of growth, financial health and return on investment in spite of the crisis and the fall of the zloty currency. However, the management had expected even better results, but these were unrealized when Poland was hit by individual catastrophes this year. One was major flooding this summer, the other was the aircraft crash in spring that killed the nation’s president, his wife and a couple more leading personalities of the country. The disaster caused two weeks of national mourning that was – apart from the tragedy itself – very bad for consumption in Poland. Last week, Intersport Polska opened its 29th store in the country in the town of Zakopane.
