With the wearing of medical face masks, or FFP2 masks, now mandatory on public transport and in stores in Germany to help contain the Corona pandemic, German climbing and safety equipment supplier Skylotec has announced it is ramping up its production of medical face masks to avoid supply shortages. Currently, Skylotec produces medical-quality IIR-type mouth-nose protection at a monthly rate of 10 million units. The company had received a grant from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy at the end of 2020 to set up a state-of-the-art machine park, as a result of which a second facility will be commissioned in March to further increase production capacity. Skylotec aims to reach a capacity of half a billion units as early as in the second quarter of this year. The masks are currently supplied primarily to the healthcare sector, but private individuals can also order smaller quantities online.
