Dutch bicycle subscription pioneer Swapfiets, founded in 2014, is continuing its expansion course in 2021. The new country markets are Spain and Austria. In addition, more cities in France have been added to the company’s subscription business.
Swapfiets, a subsidiary of the Pon Group, calls itself the world’s “bike-as-a-service” company. Members receive a fully functional bike or e-mobility solution for their own use for a monthly subscription fee. If necessary, a repair service is available within 48 hours to fix or directly replace the two-wheeler at no additional costs. Thanks to this concept, Swapfiets currently has almost 220,000 subscribers in Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the U.K. With Austria and Spain it is now conquering two more European countries. In mid-March, the doors of a new Swapfiets store opened in Barcelona. Besides, the service will be available in Vienna, Austria, and in the French cities of Lyon, Nantes, Strasbourg and Toulouse by the end of April.
In addition to bicycles and e-bikes, Swapfiets also offers a foldable e-step scooter called “E-Kick,” currently only available in selected cities. The product portfolio also includes e-motor scooters called “E-Scoot,“ developed and manufactured by the Chinese supplier Niu. They are also only available by monthly subscription in a few selected cities at present. According to Swapfiets CEO Marc de Vries, his company’s focus will, however, remain on bicycles.
